Course Objective:

This advanced training program develops the knowledge and leadership skills required to plan, conduct, lead, and report Environmental Management System (EMS) audits against ISO 14001:2026. Going beyond the internal auditor level, this course prepares participants to lead audit teams in first, second, and third-party audit contexts, covering the new climate change, biodiversity, life-cycle, and Management of Change requirements of the 2026 standard.

Core Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the application of environmental management principles in the context of ISO 14001:2026.
  • Relate the EMS to organizational products, services, activities, and operational processes — including the new life-cycle perspective.
  • Relate organizational context and interested party needs to EMS planning, explicitly including climate change and biodiversity (Clause 4.1).
  • Assess the risk of significant environmental impacts and activities identified within the organization's EMS.
  • Assess the effectiveness of methodologies to control environmental hazards, including the new Clause 6.3 Management of Change.
  • Assess EMS roles and responsibilities within the context of the organizational environment.
  • Determine the adequacy and effectiveness of the EMS in achieving its intended outcomes.
  • Understand the application of auditing principles, procedures, and techniques per ISO 19011.
  • Conduct effective audits in the context of the auditee's organizational situation.
  • Apply regulations and compliance obligations relevant to the EMS and audit conduct.
  • Practice personal attributes necessary for effective and efficient management system auditing.

These skills are exclusive to the Lead Auditor course and go beyond the Internal Auditor level:
  • Establish, plan, and task the activities of an audit team.
  • Communicate effectively with the auditee and audit client throughout the audit lifecycle.
  • Organize and direct audit team members to achieve audit objectives.
  • Prevent and resolve conflict with the auditee and/or within the audit team.
  • Prepare and complete the formal audit report in accordance with ISO 19011 requirements.
